Estelle Whewell is a self-taught print artist living and working in East Sussex. Born in Liverpool, she travelled with her parents to live in Cypress, Turkey and Malta as a young child and later settled in North Devon before studying Geography at the University of Sheffield. From there, she lived in London and Hong Kong before making her home in Brighton and Hove, with her daughter Sophie.
A keen sketch artist, Estelle predominantly uses the medium of lino print to render her images, which produces the bold representation of line. She balances this boldness by deploying colour and varied carving techniques to bring warmth and delicacy to her work. Estelle draws inspiration from the natural world, Japanese woodcuts, botanical illustrations, the human form, textiles and fashion design.
Estelle enrolled on an introduction to printing course in 2012 and it didn’t take long before she mastered the art of thinking in mirror image and fell for the smell of carved lino, the sticky sound of ink on roller, the precision of registration, and not forgetting, the magic of the big reveal!
Since completing the course she has exhibited and sold her prints at Brighton and Hove’s Open Houses Festival, local cafes and shops, and undertaken private commissions.
In November 2020 Estelle won the Waitrose Food Magazine illustrated cover competition and is excited about the new opportunities this may lead to!
